Chief George Sweetwater has called an emergency meeting of the Tribal Council to discuss Mr. Nuthen’s announcement about the hearing concerning the mercury pollution reduction plan for the State.

George is aware that elevated levels of mercury have been detected in fish from the ponds and lakes on tribal land as well as in the Ramford River. He has serious reservations about mercury contamination adversely affecting:

  • The health of members of the tribe - especially children;
  • The "Renapi Eco-resort and Casino". The tribe is about to close a deal to develop a multi-million dollar casino and eco-tourism facility. The design of the resort, by the famous architect Itsall Green, has won the prestigious Frank Loyd Wright "Falling Waters" award for Environmental Integration. Guests will be able to participate in a variety of activities centered around the recreational opportunities on the lakes, streams, and ponds including fishing.

The Tribal Council decides that the health, safety, and economic interests of the Renapi can best be served by the tribe taking a pro-active role by participating in the hearing. The Council directs Chief Sweetwater to coordinate the Renapi effort.
