One of the largest former industrial sites in the
County, located on a bend in the Ramford River, was owned by the
Johns Ramville Corporation, a manufacturer of all kinds of asbestos
products. The old plant location is now a "brownfield"
site, and still contains a large landfill adjacent to the river,
and actually in the floodplain, where substantial amounts of waste
from the manufacturing process were buried. Recent flooding
has exposed the "toe" of the landfill at the bend of the
river and asbestos fibers are washing into the water.
Otto Trawler, the Ramford Riverkeeper, makes daily
patrols on the river to keep tabs on public and industrial uses
of the waterway was very concerned after the unusual floods during
the Spring because of the erosion of the river banks and the leaching
of materials from the Ramsville landfill into the river. He
reported the conditions to the Department of Environmental Protection
(DEP) and was informed that the Commissioner was aware of the situation
and planed to take action. Otto contacted Gill Netter, President
of the Commercial and Recreational Fisheries Association and they
discussed their concerns about the effects of asbestos fibers on
aquatic life.
