Teacher Notes

1. If available show the DVD “Building a Meadowlands”. It is a nice introduction to the project.

2. A field trip to the Meadowlands and Xanadu is optional, but would be a nice addition if it could be arranged

3. When you first assign the project have the students view the Webquest. Students will need orientation about how a Webquest works and what is expected of them. Let them read through the Pre-Introduction, Scenario and Task. Give them the DUE DATE.

4. Consider allowing students to pick their own construction company. For convenience write the construction company names on the board and have the students write their names below it. Record the names for your records.

5. Have students meet with the other students in their construction company. Have them read through the Process and decide which people will be doing each of the specific roles their company will be competing for as a subcontractor.

6. Have students write on the board, under their construction name, which two areas of Xanadu they are going to be competing for as the subcontractor. Make sure all the areas are covered and that only two, perhaps three companies at most are addressing the same two areas.

7. Have students in each group exchange emails and phone numbers. This is very important because the students will probably need to arrange to meet outside of class time.

8. Direct the students to the Presentation Page and the Rubrics. Spend a few minutes with the Rubric so they know how their grades will be determined.

9. Tell the students that the Resources listed maybe be useful for more than just the expert group working in that area. For example, the economics expert might benefit from the Resources in the Green Design section.

10. Encourage them to begin the project as soon as possible. Reinforce it will take a lot of work to do the research, to answer the questions, to compose the final recommendations and prepare a unified group presentation.

11. Encourage them to meet frequently outside of class. If time allows and computers are available, give them time during class to meet and work.

12. When the construction companies make their presentations explain that the other groups will need to take notes so they can ask questions. Remind them the construction companies are in competition for having their recommendations used and winning the subcontract, and so will need to challenge the other groups’ recommendations. Similarly, each group should anticipate and be prepared to defend its recommendations.

13. Give the students about 4 weeks to complete the Webquest. This should be sufficient.
