Your Investigation

Dr. Joyce Wilson, the school’s Director, called Dr. Galena (who she had met at a community meeting at South Park) to ask her advice about the children’s favorite pet. Dr. Galena’s suspicions were aroused because:

- the only variable in Aspin’s life seemed to be the renovation; - the age of the building was consistent with the presence of lead based paint;

  • Aspin’s symptoms mimicked those in children who have been exposed to lead; and
  • Angora rabbits groom themselves by licking their fur.

Dr. Galena suggested that Dr. Wilson:

  • test Aspin’s blood for lead;
  • sample the entire South Park building for the presence of lead;
  • if necessary, extend the Winter vacation until successful remediation was completed; and
  • conduct a lead education program for the children and parents at the South Park Pre-school.
