The floor is made of an environmentally friendly surface created from crushed household and industrial glass that would otherwise have ended up in landfills. It consists of about 75% recycled glass and 25% binder, and is a more durable, varied- color, and ecologically friendly surface than mined marble.

The multi-colored glass from discarded bottles, mirrors, and plate windows was used to create a representation of our Solar System, including images of the Sun and its orbits: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, the Asteroid Belt, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto.

The pattern was designed by Joanne DiLorenzo, a landscape architect for the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission, which built the Center and oversees the Meadowlands Environment Center.
